What we'll be making: A layered abstract painting inspired by Alma Woodsey Thomas
In this colourful class, children will explore the colourful world of abstract painting inspired by the work of Alma Woodsey Thomas. Known for her vibrant colours and joyful patterns, Thomas created paintings made from small, rhythmic brushstrokes that feel full of movement and energy.
Students will create their own A3 abstract painting using acrylic paint and paint sticks. They will experiment with colour combinations, repeated shapes, and expressive brush marks to build a bright, dynamic composition in the spirit of Thomas’s work. Children will play with colour, pattern, and texture in this fun introduction to abstract art.
Painting offers many important benefits for children. It helps develop creativity, confidence, and self-expression, while also strengthening fine motor skills and hand–eye coordination. Working with colour and composition encourages problem-solving and decision-making, and the open-ended nature of abstract art allows children to explore their own ideas freely. Most importantly, painting can be a relaxing and enjoyable way for children to express themselves.
By the end of the class, each student will take home a vibrant abstract artwork inspired by the joyful style of Alma Woodsey Thomas.
